Sunday Morning Forum

Reading through the Bible can be a tough assignment.  Taking the Bible in small pieces each week, through the sermons and the Adult Forum discussions, allows me time to think about how this story of faith can help me grow in my faith and express my faith in my daily life.  Others often hear different things as they read the Bible's stories.  It is helpful for me to hear their perspectives as I learn how to express my own faith.

Monday Morning Bible Study
In the Monday Morning Bible Study we are studying the Book of Romans. Pastor Kay is an excellent teacher, and I take advantage of her vast knowledge of the Bible with all the questions I ask. My faith has taken a leap forward in this study. Nelson Johnsrud, our Lay Minister, takes over when Pastor is out of town and does a great job of teaching. Don’t miss out on this rich experience. Come and be part of it.

Wednesday Morning Bible Study
Our Wednesday morning Bible study group has been experimenting with new and different ways to study the Bible.  Our current study is based on the Peder Eide song "As Is."  We take the lyrics one line at a time, digging into the story behind each one.  I'm having fun writing and leading this study.  We have bonded into a close-knit group and our discussions probe deeply into how the Word and the Spirit affect our daily lives.  We welcome new members.  Please join us!  If we run out of room, we will get a bigger room.

Eastern Lay School of Ministry (ECSW-ELCA)
 People of faith act!
Indeed, as Christians, we are called to apply the gifts we are given in our daily lives.  This fact drew me into the Lay School program in order to build my faith, explore a calling to work with faith-based medical clinics, and equip me for this service.  Lay School preparation involves a two year period of structured intellectual stimulation and self-discovery.  Through formal lectures and small group sharing, participants are allowed to learn, grow and explore their faith, gifts, calling and commitment to service.
Halfway through the program, I have witnessed this transformational power.  Our Lay School "class" came from all walks of life, each bringing strengths and weaknesses.  From this diverse group a nurturing community of faith has formed eager to apply our shared experiences.  Life is more than just arriving at death safely.  It is to dream and act on these dreams.  Calvary has a strong history of Lay School support ranging from leadership provided by Pastor Kay to a strong class of graduates forming a foundation for Calvary's mission.  I am looking forward to starting (and completing) the second year and then applying these gifts in service.

First Place 4 Health
First Place 4 Health is a group of people looking for balance and well-being in life. The goal is to live a life that is pleasing to God. The program looks at 4 aspects of life: Body (how we fuel/recharge ourselves), mind (our thought patterns and priorities), emotions (quality of relationships with self and others) and spirit (our relationship with God through Jesus) (member’s guide, page 8).
The group meets on Thursday evenings for about an hour and a half to discuss a self-guided Bible study that is part of the class. Each week we are presented with a theme (health/nutrition, fitness, growing in patience, growing in joy etc.) and given various passages to read and write down a few thoughts on.
First Place 4 Health is not an aggressive program to achieve wellness. It provides tools and small ideas to help us become more efficient disciples of Jesus while taking care of ourselves, loving/growing with others and being a positive aspect in society.
